YSU-LEIMUN High School Conference
Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio
WELCOME FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
As Secretary General of the 2020 YSU-LEIMUN High School Conference, I would like to welcome you to this year’s conference. Just last year, I joined the Youngstown State Model United Nations team as a freshman and over the past two years this organization has given me countless opportunities for which I’m extremely grateful.
Model United Nations is an organization where you will learn public speaking and writing skills. You will gain insight into other people’s cultures and perspectives on the world that will allow you to empathize with vastly different people. You will gain knowledge of complex international situations, diplomacy, and geo-political knowledge of areas of the world that large parts of the adult population don’t even know exist. Empathy and knowledge are extremely important as Malala Yousafzai points out in saying, “I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through not only educating our minds but our hearts and our souls”.In order to accomplish Malala’s vision of world peace, one last skill MUN will teach you is cooperation. As you will see there are many opposing values in the world, however there must be compromise and sacrifices made in order to satisfy the heart and soul for the sake of humanity. Collaboration is, in my opinion, the most important skill, because despite differing views you can still accomplish something amazing.
As the conference begins, I would like you to keep in mind the four main goals of the 1951 UN Charter: maintaining worldwide peace and security, developing relations among nations, fostering cooperation between nations in order to solve economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian international problems, and providing a forum for bringing countries together to meet the UN’s purposes and goals. Through these goals you can turn your committee’s from a conglomerate of nations into the United Nations.
I’d like to thank you all for taking the initiative to be here and wish you the best of luck.
