2018 Welcome From the Secretary-General

As Secretary General of the 2018 YSU-LEIMUN High School Conference, I would like to welcome you to this year’s conference. I am currently a student on the Youngstown State MUN team. Model United Nations was the first organization that I joined after starting college and has played a significant role in my collegiate career.

Robert F. Kennedy once said, “There are those who look at the way things are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” Model United Nations allows students to unleash their creativity and become immersed in a world of possibility. Public speaking, teamwork, and compromise are just some of the skills that Model United Nations helps develop. Delegates are introduced to the complex system of international politics. International law acts as a juxtaposition of a nations’ foreign policy to international agreements, which in turn, cultivates delegate’s ability to compromise and cooperate with one another. Although unrest and uncertainty have swept the world of international politics, Model United Nations instills hope that, despite our differences, we can all work together to achieve something great.

As the conference is now upon us, I would like you to keep in mind the four main goals of the 1951 UN Charter: maintaining worldwide peace and security, developing relations among nations, fostering cooperation between nations in order to solve economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian international problems, and providing a forum for bringing countries together to meet the UN’s purposes and goals. Defining one’s goals are the first steps to achieving them and I challenge all of you to achieve these four goals in your committees in order to unite the nations that you are representing.

I look forward to seeing all of you during this weekend and wish you the best of luck for the conference.
